Second Graham Nattrass Lecture and GSLG AGM

Under the auspices of the German Studies Library Group and in association with the British Library, a Lecture in memory of Graham Nattrass (1940-2012) will be delivered on 25 June 2018 at the British Library Conference Centre in London.  The event is held in the Dickens and Eliot Rooms; refreshments will be served for the AGM and at a reception prior to the Lecture at 17.30 onwards.

16.30  GSLG AGM 17.30  Reception 18.15  Lecture: Dr Stefan Manz, Aston University “Enemies in the Empire”: Germans in British Internment Camps during the First World War

Graham Nattrass was Chair of the German Studies Library Group from 2003 till 2007 and a founding member of the Group.  He enjoyed a long and distinguished career at the British Library, becoming Head of Germanic Collections in 1996 and retiring from the Library in 2005, as its Head of West European Collections, having worked at the British Library (and its antecedents) since 1971.

Dr Stefan Manz is Reader in German Studies at Aston University Birmingham, UK, and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.  He holds an MA from Freiburg and a PhD from Durham.  Research interests include migration studies, Anglo-German relations, and current German affairs.  Dr Manz’s latest monograph Constructing a German Diaspora: The “Greater German Empire”, 1871-1914 (Routledge, 2014) was named a CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title.  His current monograph project explores civilian internment in the British Empire during World War I and is funded by the Gerda Henkel Foundation.  A concurrent public engagement grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Council enables reconstructed theatre performances from behind the wire (June 2018 in Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Hawick), an exhibition, an information centre (both opening 3 November 2018 in Hawick), and large-scale German-English translations of texts produced by internees.

There is no charge to attend the Lecture, but places are strictly limited.  If you intend to come, please email Dorothea Miehe, Chair of the German Studies Library Group – dorothea.miehe@bl.uk.
